Tools: Moving List

Dear Customer,

Sometimes, leaving your home and moving to a new one is not always a very pleasant experience since it can hide a lot of surprises. Many people cannot realise that moving can be a very complicated activity, and it can cause a million of problems to them even after their settlement to the new property. Damaged or lost furniture because of a bad selection of a moving agent, extremely expensive relocation costs because of delay in booking a moving company, forgotten or misplaced personal records are just a few problems one can anticipate with moving, and the list can go on and on.

After a few of our customers have moved to Cyprus, especially from UK, we have reached a point that we learned a few things about moving and the most important of all is organising your move.

Below is a checklist of what you need to do ahead of time in order for you to have a smooth moving. Some of the points might not suit you, but they might give you a clue of what to do with something else.

Eight Weeks Before
  • Get price estimates for different moving agents and examine different options.

  • If you are interested, contact the Revenue Office to determine what moving expenses are tax deductible. Remember to save receipts!

  • Determine, from employer, which relocation expenses and vendors are covered under company relocation policy.

  • Notify current landlord of intention to move.

  • Investigate childcare facilities in the new city.

  • Obtain school information in the new city. Arrange for transfer of school records.

  • Start to use things you can't move such as frozen food or hazardous / flammable materials.
Six Weeks Before
  • Gather information about your new city via online city guides or local newspapers' web sites.

  • Consider holding a garage sale or place ads in the newspaper to sell items you do not want to move.

  • Make a list of friends, family and everyone else you need to notify about your move.

  • Contact schools, doctors, dentists, accountants, and veterinarians to obtain copies of personal records.
Four Weeks Before
  • Determine if you will need self-storage for some of your belongings.

  • Obtain change of address forms.

  • Send change of address cards to friends, families, magazine subscriptions, etc.

  • Arrange to have your utilities (gas, electric, oil, water, phone, cable TV, trash) turned off at your current residence and turned on at your new residence.

  • Contact insurance companies and arrange for new auto, home or renter's insurance coverage.

  • Purchase packing material and start packing things you won't need until after the move.

  • Determine furniture that you will need to buy or rent.

  • Arrange interim housing if your new home will not be ready when you arrive into town.
Three Weeks Before
  • Arrange to open a bank account in your new area.

  • Make travel arrangements / plan driving route to new residence.

  • Arrange for transportation of your pets.

  • Secure rental car if necessary.
Two Weeks Before
  • Check and service your automobile if you will be travelling a long distance.

  • Consult with current and future landlord for any special requirements that need to be taken care of.

  • Give away items you don't plan on moving (i.e., plants).
